STEVE BENTON from a 2nd generation racing family offering to serve clients to the best of his ability together with commitment and 20 years of dedicated racing experience.I come from a family involved in horseracing, my father Buller Benton started off as a jockey at the age of 15, he went on into training at the age of 22 and trained successfully for 35 years, during which time he was top Natal Trainer 7 times and top South African Trainer in 1963. My Dad was a great man to learn the tricks of the trade from and he inspired me to follow my dream to become a trainer. During his training years he trained for the "Beef Barron" Cyril Hurvitz, and won many Grade 1 Races including HOLIDAY INNS, REVLON CHARLIES HANDICAP, SA GUINNESS, SA OAKES, NATAL GUINNESS, CAPE GUINEAS & CAPE DERBY to mention a few... he has had over 1000 winners in his time and is still very involved in the racing industry.My twin brother Craig Benton also trained for many years and won numerous feature races, he joined the Jockey Club in Johannesburg as a Stipendiary Steward and thereafter pursued a career in Macau and is currently in the U.K. with the Racing Academy.My career path as follows:-1979 : Assistant trainer to my father Buller Benton. 1980 To 1990: Employed as an Assistant Trainer to A.D. ("Tony") Furness. During my time with Tony, I was associated with horses such as: French Mustard who ran second in July Handicap 1982. Lotus Land, who won the Natal Guineas in 1993, and ran second in the Jockey's International at Scottsville Race Course in Pietermaritzburg. 1990 to 2010 : I started training at Ashburton Training Centre. My first winner was a horse called Up To Mischief she won on my son's birthday, 3 months into the start of my career. I have been training on my own for a total of 20 years and trained over 300 winners.Horses I have trained that stood out - Dance Festival owned in partnership by wonderful clients: Steve Fuhri & Alec CampbellHe won a total of 13 races, which included: the John Skeaping Trophy in 1993. the Michealmas Handicap in1994. the Christmas Handicap in 1995, and was placed J & B Met, and competed in the July Handicap in the Same Year. he won the Michael Roberts Handicap in 1997.Waterville Arms owned by Steve Fuhria winner Of 9 Races Including: the Frank Lambert Stakes. Alle Breve winner of the Sentinel Stakes and minor races owned by a great supporter Johann Venter. Steve Benton Racing Stables is a small training stable with a personal hands on approach when preparing the thoroughbred horses. There are many years of experience in all aspects of the equine world and we aim to produce the best results for all of the horses under our care. We reside 500 meters from the stables and therefore can offer a 24/7 round the clock equine care. Following the family tradition - my son Matthew Benton is my assistant -together we work as a team and we strive to maintain personalised attention for every owner and horse in our care. Given the opportunity and support with good stock thoroughbred horses, we can continue to produce winners.Ashburton Training Centre is a fantastic facility incorporating circular tracks - 1 grass and 1 sand - they are 2000 metres in diameter. The stables are barn style, well insulated and provided with paddocks. There's security fencing around the perimeter of the Training Centre with a 24 hour security company on call. Vets & Farriers are also available daily at the Training Centre providing you with peace of mind.
